The Sigma BF is a camera designed around removing things. The mode dial is gone. So is the SD card. Physical interaction is reduced to three buttons and a control pad; the screen can show little more than the live image, bringing up shutter speed, aperture, ISO, exposure compensation and color mode when needed.1

That is the familiar promise of minimalism: remove whatever sits between the user and the act itself.

Then look at how the body is made.

Sigma says each BF is machined for seven hours from a single solid aluminum ingot to produce its seamless unibody shell.1 Seven hours of machine time for an object whose visual argument is that almost nothing should be visible.

The contradiction is more interesting than the camera. Complexity has not disappeared. It has moved from the user into manufacturing.

The interface wants to become a dark box again

Iwasaki Design Studio calls the BF a “modern-day camera obscura”: the lens captures the subject and the camera returns to being the dark box used to release the shutter.2

Sigma turns that idea into interface design by removing the traditional shooting-mode dial. Rather than starting with P, A, S or M, the photographer directly reaches five elements the company treats as central: shutter speed, aperture, ISO, exposure compensation and color mode.1

That is more than a graphic cleanup. It changes the hierarchy of the object.

Traditional enthusiast cameras often display power through controls. Every extra button reassures the experienced user that a function is immediately available. The BF takes almost the opposite position. It accepts that some features will be less visible so the surface can remain quiet.

Even the buttons are unusual. Sigma describes them as pressure-sensitive and haptic, intended to retain tactile feedback while reducing conventional mechanical wear.1 Visually, something has been removed. Technically, a mechanical interaction has been replaced by sensing and feedback electronics.

That is a recurring feature of industrial minimalism: removing a visible element often requires inventing an invisible system to do its job.

The unibody is a manufacturing decision before it is a style decision

The same logic appears in the enclosure.

A conventional camera can be assembled from a frame, panels, doors and screwed parts. Those boundaries are useful. They simplify assembly, provide access and allow different manufacturing routes.

Sigma instead machines the BF from one aluminum block.1

The visual benefit is obvious: continuity, no obvious seams, a dense-object feeling. The industrial cost is less visible. Manufacturing begins with much more metal than the final shell, then a machine progressively removes whatever is not the camera. Sigma states the operation takes seven hours.1

That number is not a universal quality metric. A part that takes seven hours is not automatically seven times better than one produced in an hour. It tells us something else: Sigma accepted a slow process to produce a form that looks unusually simple.

That is almost the reverse of cost-driven design, where screws and parting lines reveal how an object went together. Here manufacturing works specifically to erase evidence of its own assembly.

Removing the SD card simplifies one system by concentrating another

The BF replaces an SD slot with 230GB of internal storage. Sigma says that is enough for more than 14,000 JPEGs, 4,300 lossless-compressed RAW images or about 2.5 hours of video at its highest-quality setting, with USB‑C handling transfer.1

Again, the user-facing gesture is simple: no card to select, no card door, no media to forget.

But an SD card has one extremely ordinary and useful property: it comes out. It can be swapped when full, replaced if it fails, carried in multiples or handed to someone else without handing over the camera.

Internal storage makes the body cleaner and daily operation smoother. It also concentrates more responsibility in the camera itself.

That is not necessarily a bad trade. It is simply the conceptual cost of minimalism: when a decision disappears for the user, the system makes that decision somewhere else.

A simple product can be an extremely opinionated product

The BF makes a useful distinction that design marketing often blurs: simple does not mean neutral.

A device with twenty buttons exposes many decisions to its user. A device with four controls can appear more universal while actually imposing a stronger view of what deserves immediate access.

Sigma decides that five settings are central. It decides removable storage is unnecessary. It decides a body without visible seams is worth hours of machining. It decides haptic sensing can replace part of the familiar mechanical interface.1

Minimalism is therefore not the absence of design. It is a concentration of design decisions.

The useful question when looking at a minimal product may not be “what did they remove?” but “where did everything I no longer see go?”

On the Sigma BF, the answer is unusually literal: into software, internal storage, sensing electronics and, for seven hours, the milling machine.
