Before anyone is admitted to Open Source Ecology's Future Builders Academy, the applicant has to manufacture part of a house.
The test is unusually specific: build a 4 × 9 ft wall panel using the Seed Eco-Home framing system, source the lumber and sheet material, record the build as a time-lapse, and photograph the required quality-control points. OSE evaluates the wall, but also the documentation, attention to detail and ability to follow the procedure.2
Rather than sitting next to the curriculum as a preparatory exercise, the wall test already contains the curriculum's central logic: build something real and leave enough evidence for the work to be inspected.
Future Builders Academy is trying to replace part of abstract schooling with a material loop: learn a technique, produce something that has to work, measure what actually happened, document the result, then return that documentation to Open Source Ecology's public knowledge system.13
The proposition is compelling, although describing the Academy as a mature school would be premature. In OSE's 2026 planning documents, the first full productive cohort of 24 people remains scheduled for mid-2027.56
What is interesting today is less a finished institution than the attempt to build the institution while its students are expected to build everything else.
A built test
The application begins conventionally enough with a wiki account, public work log, introductory video, written application and interview, but then the wall panel turns admission into a practical build.2
Applicants receive drawings for a module from the Seed Eco-Home system and must obtain the materials, choose hand or power tools, complete the piece, make a time-lapse and submit photographs of quality-control points, so the outcome becomes more than “I managed to assemble a wall”: another person can inspect how the work happened.2
The 2025 contract carries the same logic into the program by describing task-level competency tests with timing, quality criteria and repeated documentation. During production days, OSE proposes body cameras so sequences can be reviewed and detailed build times extracted later.4
The system can sound excessively quantified. Its educational advantage lies in moving practical competence out of the chapter and into an object that has to hold together, meet a dimension and survive inspection.
Learning on production
Housing sits at the centre of the model because the same house is supposed to serve as training material and a product OSE can eventually sell.
Its 2025 announcement describes a swarm build target in which 24 trained people complete a Seed Eco-Home in five days.1 The contract translates that target to roughly 1,000 human hours for one house, based on earlier build data and framed as a level the future cohort is meant to reach rather than a performance already demonstrated by that cohort.4

This is where the proposal differs most sharply from a conventional maker workshop. A classroom object can become irrelevant once assessment is over. OSE's economic model instead assumes that student work contributes to production with actual market value.47
The still-pilot 3 House Machine Model makes the separation explicit: tuition would fund the Academy, while outside capital would pay for land, materials, insurance and construction costs for three houses. Completing those homes would be the concrete output of the first 24-person cohort.7
Recruitment, permits, build overruns and property sales can all break the spreadsheet model, so it cannot establish profitability. What the plan does establish is the intention to connect the education budget with productive capacity acquired during education.
Twenty trades
The curriculum deliberately stretches across an unusually large range of skills.
OSE says each participant should learn 20 trades involved in integrated house construction, then add design, open-source product development, collaboration and enterprise work depending on the chosen track.34
The curriculum does not pretend that this breadth comes for free. Its first weeks are meant for skill acquisition and competency testing, with modular learning stations for tools, electrical work, plumbing, structure and other sub-systems.3
A shared object changes the relationship between subjects because plumbing can no longer remain an isolated chapter once its pipes have to cross a wall whose structure already exists; electrical work meets fabrication, fabrication meets logistics, logistics meets scheduling, and interface errors stop being theoretical.
To be sure, passing a wall-panel test says very little about mastery of twenty trades. The documents describe timed tests, quality thresholds and competency progression across the program, but the 24-person cohort meant to test that arrangement at scale has not happened.46
In that sense, the Academy remains one of OSE's prototypes.
Publish everything
Open documentation provides the second structural mechanism.
Applicants already need a public Work Log, and the contract later asks participants to preserve notes, hours, tests, photographs and progress in OSE's collaborative tools. Work on Open Source Ecology products is expected to return to the project's repositories and documentation spaces rather than remain private know-how.24
The requirement changes what an exercise leaves behind.
If a student improves a build sequence and keeps the trick in their head, the next cohort starts almost from scratch; when the change is measured, filmed, linked to a specific part and documented with its limits, the construction system can inherit the improvement.
This may be the most reusable part of OSE's experiment even for organizations uninterested in its much larger political project. A trade school, workshop or fablab does not need to promise an open-source civilization to ask students to turn improvements into documentation the next group can actually use.
The workshop then gains a memory beyond individual performance.
Four years, three months, ten days
One problem becomes impossible to ignore across the sources: Future Builders Academy does not yet have one stable shape.
The 2025 announcement and contract describe a four-year apprenticeship.14 The curriculum keeps that duration while adding several tracks, including a six-month enterprise route.3 In the 2026 Growth Plan, however, the initial immersion lasts three months and serves as a feeder into a longer program.5
The current public site mixes shorter offers with the four-year route.
The variation reflects more than loose marketing language because OSE is redesigning its training funnel while expanding campus infrastructure, recruiting participants and trying to turn Builder Crash Courses into a repeatable product.56
The roadmap states the sequence more plainly: prove the crash-course model first, launch the first productive 24-person cohort around mid-2027, and use that cohort to test the Future Builders Academy model.6
This is nowhere near educational validation across hundreds of students.
School as prototype
That incompleteness is exactly why the FBA is worth watching now.
OSE is writing a curriculum while also building accommodation and workshops, formalizing tests, trying to finance education through production, converting builds into exercises and turning those exercises into documentation for later builds.35
The school is being treated as another engineered system.
Nothing in the documents guarantees that the system will work. For a group of 24 apprentices, recruitment, genuine mastery across a broad curriculum, construction-site safety, house sales and financial sustainability all remain hypotheses that OSE's 2026 roadmap places in the future.567
The simplest educational idea, however, does not need to wait until 2027 to be understood.
At Future Builders Academy, the ideal assignment is supposed to survive grading as infrastructure, evidence of competence, or a procedure that somebody else should be able to repeat.
The first wall panel built during the application is therefore testing more than whether a candidate can operate a drill.
It is already testing whether they can make, measure and transfer.
