# Your Wi-Fi router can now tell when someone crosses the room

Xfinity WiFi Motion turns already-installed gateways into motion detectors without cameras. The sensor arrives through software, and a new category of presence data arrives with it.

The router on the living-room shelf did not receive a camera. No radar module was added to its case. Yet in some Xfinity homes it can now report that movement has crossed a room.

Comcast calls the feature **WiFi Motion**. It is offered through Xfinity Shield on compatible gateways and is deliberately activated in the Xfinity app. Once enabled, it watches for disturbances in Wi-Fi links between the gateway and stationary devices already around the home: a smart speaker, thermostat, printer or another device that normally stays powered.[1](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion/)[2](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion-faqs)

Almost nothing changes in the living room. The same radios that carried packets yesterday are now also asked to report physical disturbances along their links.

That is what makes the feature both useful and uncomfortable: **an object can gain a new sensing capability long after installation without any visible sensor entering the house**.

## The invisible sensor

Xfinity describes each sensing area as something like an oval between the gateway and a selected device.[2](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion-faqs) When a person or sufficiently large object crosses that area, their body changes radio propagation. The system detects a change in the wireless signal and can generate a motion event.

This is not a camera reconstructed from radio waves. Comcast says WiFi Motion **captures no images, video or audio**, does not identify people and does not report an exact location.[1](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion/)[2](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion-faqs) Its output is closer to “something disturbed this link” than “Lea just walked from the sofa into the kitchen.”

That distinction sets the right scale for the privacy question. A changing radio channel directly exposes far less information than video while still revealing an intimate fact: **presence and movement inside a private space**.

## Stable endpoints

For the measurement to mean anything, its radio endpoints need to stay roughly where they are. Xfinity therefore asks for devices that are **stationary, usually powered and properly connected**.[1](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion/) A phone leaving the house, a laptop going to sleep or a gadget hidden at the edge of coverage makes a poor endpoint.

Users can select several suitable devices during activation. Current support documentation mentions up to five devices in the setup flow, while some marketing pages describe three; the discrepancy is a useful reminder that the interface is still rolling out.[1](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion/)[2](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion-faqs)

The house itself becomes part of the measurement. Walls, building materials, room size and gateway placement alter the radio paths. Comcast does not guarantee detection everywhere and tells customers to test the areas they actually want to monitor.[1](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion/)

Treating the system as a magical radar filling every room would therefore be misleading. It inherits the network already in the house, including weak links, reflections and devices that sleep at inconvenient moments.

## Software is enough

Compatible gateways currently include several XB7, XB8, XB9 and XB10 variants, with specific exclusions depending on hardware and service configuration.[1](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion/)[2](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion-faqs) Comcast presents WiFi Motion as a capability available through compatible existing equipment without a dedicated motion sensor.[3](https://corporate.comcast.com/xfinity-shield)

The Verge describes the rollout as reaching **millions of existing Xfinity routers**.[4](https://www.theverge.com/news/981381/comcast-xfinity-shield-wifi-motion-sensing) Comcast's product pages do not give a precise count of homes that can activate it today, so that scale is better treated as the publication's reporting than as an official live counter.

The feature becomes genuinely unusual at the scale of the installed fleet. A conventional sensor maker must sell, ship, mount and power every detector. Comcast can add motion awareness to already-installed hardware largely through software and the app.

Comcast obviously did not invent the idea of reading motion from a Wi-Fi channel; research and smaller products have explored it for years. What changes here is visibility and distribution. The sensing function no longer arrives attached to an exotic device sold as a sensor. It appears inside ordinary network infrastructure.

## Opt in

The decisive boundary ends up in the product rather than the radio physics. Comcast says WiFi Motion is **off by default and opt-in**.[1](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion/)[2](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion-faqs)[3](https://corporate.comcast.com/xfinity-shield) A user opens the app, chooses to enable it, accepts the terms and selects which devices participate in sensing.

That deliberate step clearly separates technical capability from actual use. A router capable of sensing is not the same thing as a household actively using WiFi Motion.

The app then exposes several sensitivity levels. High sensitivity can react to smaller movement, while medium and low require a larger disturbance. Xfinity explicitly recommends lowering sensitivity in homes that share walls with neighbours.[1](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion/)

There is also a small-pet filter. Xfinity refers to animals around **40 pounds or less**, which should be read as filtering by the scale of signal disturbance rather than reliable species recognition.[1](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion/)

The amount of disruption gives a rough sense of movement scale without revealing who moved. That is enough to make sensitivity settings useful, and enough to remind us that “no camera” is not the same as “no behavioural data.”

## An event is data

Comcast says it does not monitor the motion or notifications generated by WiFi Motion in real time.[1](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion/) In a response reported by The Verge, the company also said retained data consists of motion-event information and the device associated with detection, without identity, images or audio; The Verge reports retention of up to **seven days**.[5](https://www.theverge.com/tech/982689/comcast-xfinity-wifi-motion-privacy-concerns-response)

The Verge gives an almost boring example: “motion detected by hallway smart speaker.”[5](https://www.theverge.com/tech/982689/comcast-xfinity-wifi-motion-privacy-concerns-response) That is dramatically less revealing than video, yet structured enough to form a rough timeline: activity at a particular time on a particular radio path.

Xfinity's own support documentation warns that information generated by WiFi Motion may be disclosed under lawful processes including investigations, subpoenas, court orders or related proceedings.[1](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion/)[2](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion-faqs)

Service providers already hold other categories of data that can be subject to legal requests; WiFi Motion adds one describing physical activity inside the home. The change is the **new category of information the gateway can produce**.

## The house as antenna

Xfinity makes a pre-existing ambiguity much easier to see: the line between infrastructure and sensor was never as clean as the boxes suggested. A camera announces its job through shape and direction. A PIR detector has a lens. A router looked like equipment whose job was simply to move radio traffic.

Wireless networks already measure physical properties in order to work: received power, link quality and changes in the radio channel. Sensing repurposes some of those variations as information about the environment. The antennas did not suddenly change; **the interpretation of their measurements did**.

For home automation, that ambiguity can be an advantage rather than a flaw. Activity at night, an arrival or unexpected movement can trigger awareness without putting a camera in every room. Comcast offers Home Watch, Away Watch and Dark Watch modes that turn motion events into notifications according to context.[1](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion/)[3](https://corporate.comcast.com/xfinity-shield)

The same flexibility creates the privacy question. Future implementations may become more precise, and the current feature is a reminder that connected devices can contain latent capabilities far beyond the purpose visible when they were installed.

## The real switch

“Can Wi-Fi see us?” is the wrong question. That wording grants the system abilities it does not have. Based on Xfinity's published description, WiFi Motion does not see a face, reconstruct a body or precisely track someone room by room.[1](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion/)[2](https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-motion-faqs)

The useful question is more ordinary: **who decides when a network measurement becomes data about the home?**

For now Comcast gives the right answer on the most important point: the customer has to enable WiFi Motion. That boundary matters precisely because the hardware upgrade is almost invisible.

When a sensor arrives as a new box, we can see it entering the home. When it arrives as a new menu in the router app, software consent becomes the only obvious sign that the sensing function exists.
