# Three dead Wii Remotes, one controller willing to come back

Three Wii Remotes damaged by leaking alkaline cells, insects and corrosion become a triage exercise: identify salvageable boards, clean, measure and rebuild one usable controller.

Repairing a corroded Wii Remote rarely begins with the button that stopped responding. First comes a harder decision: which wreck still deserves the time. In a video, eWastelander starts with three controllers pulled from a box of e-waste. Alkaline cells have leaked, insects have moved in, and corrosion has done its slow, quiet work.[1](https://hackaday.com/2026/08/22/turning-corroded-bug-loving-wiimotes-into-a-working-one/)[2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6_nkWCBvjY)

The repair aims for one working controller assembled from the three, which makes the process useful to watch: dirt will not simply disappear after a first bath, because the real task is triage.

## Three boards, two revisions

The boards come from at least two hardware revisions, according to Hackaday, so a part taken from the wrong Wii Remote is not automatically compatible even when it came from the same accessory and appears to have the right shape.[1](https://hackaday.com/2026/08/22/turning-corroded-bug-loving-wiimotes-into-a-working-one/)

The clearest failure is an integrated circuit that corrosion around the battery compartment eventually knocked off one board.[1](https://hackaday.com/2026/08/22/turning-corroded-bug-loving-wiimotes-into-a-working-one/) At that point, cleaning is only the beginning. The next question is whether the pads, traces and remaining board can still accept a reasonable repair.

The logic looks more like a salvage yard than a wash: compare the donors, keep the least damaged parts and reserve shared components for the best candidate. The value has moved from each complete device to the inventory they form together.

## Cleaning has limits

The first phase neutralizes battery residue, then thoroughly cleans the disassembled parts.[1](https://hackaday.com/2026/08/22/turning-corroded-bug-loving-wiimotes-into-a-working-one/) That work matters, but “cleaning” can conceal several different faults: a dirty surface, an eaten trace, an interrupted contact or a component no longer attached to the board.

Those faults call for different gestures: dirt comes off, a trace gets checked, a contact gets repaired, and a detached component needs board-level work if its connections are still usable. A controller can look presentable without being healthy.

The video shows at least one rebuilt, working Wii Remote; the two worse units remain an open question in Hackaday’s account.[1](https://hackaday.com/2026/08/22/turning-corroded-bug-loving-wiimotes-into-a-working-one/)[2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6_nkWCBvjY) One successful repair still says nothing about the failure rate of the pile it came from.

## Another life for the shell

The story also opens a second path, but not a shipping-product promise. OpenMote proposes an independent ESP32-S3-based board that would replace the original electronics inside a Wii Remote shell.[1](https://hackaday.com/2026/08/22/turning-corroded-bug-loving-wiimotes-into-a-working-one/)[3](https://openmote.io/) Its official site describes a Crowd Supply campaign as coming soon and says the files will be open-sourced before units ship.[3](https://openmote.io/)

That is not the already-available solution in the repair video. It is another way to look at a damaged shell: even when the original electronics are gone, the shape, buttons and ergonomics may still be useful. The project remains announced, though, not hardware delivered and validated by this repair.

The reusable lesson is simpler than a miracle product: sort, compare and measure, then build one example from the survivors. Corrosion beat three controllers, but it did not necessarily beat the inventory inside them.
