# What 1,929 fonts look like when sorted by job

Type Barn takes the Google Fonts catalog and reorganizes it around the designer's actual question: what kind of typeface do I need for this particular job?

A font directory can contain two thousand families and still be less useful than a sheet with ten good choices.

**Type Barn** tries to fix that by taking the open-source Google Fonts catalog and organizing it not only by typographic family, but by **job**: body text, headings, UI, monospace or display.

The site lists 1,929 families, five categories, five use-case hubs and ten pairing guides. It says its catalog data is current as of April 2026.

## Choose the job first

The principle is almost boring: start with the work the typeface has to do.

A large headline face has different constraints from a UI font. A coding mono is not selected by the same criteria as a serif for long-form reading. Type Barn exposes licenses, available styles, writing systems and designer credits, then adds groupings based on intended use.

It also offers editorial pairings such as Fraunces with Inter or Space Grotesk with IBM Plex Mono. Those are recommendations, not universal rules.

## The site follows suit

Type Barn emphasizes another, less visible decision: its pages are server-rendered and do not depend on a JavaScript-only navigation layer.

For a directory, that makes sense. A font does not need a loading ceremony before you can look at it.

There is an obvious limit. Sorting 1,929 families into five use cases is still a simplification. Brand context, language, text density or print can make a perfectly sensible screen recommendation irrelevant.

But the shift is useful. Many discovery tools begin with the catalog and ask the designer to invent the filtering criteria afterward. Type Barn begins with the criterion.

It is a small interface decision with a broader lesson for creative tools: when the choice set becomes enormous, adding more options helps less than giving people a good way to eliminate them.
