# A 2 mm sheet of aluminium answers one question: what day is it?

Ben Ferrick’s Day Display solves a tiny problem with a 2 mm sheet of milled and bent aluminium. At Stupid Engineering, the manufacturing constraint is the product language.

The Day Display does not tell you the date. It does not count weeks. It synchronizes with nothing. It shows the day of the week.

That is a lot of metal for answering “what day is it?”, which is precisely the point of Stupid Engineering.

Ben Ferrick’s object is made from **2 mm aluminium**, precision milled and bent into a wall-mounted form measuring 165 × 85 × 75 mm.[1](https://www.stupidstupid.net/product-page/day-display) Designboom frames it as a response to holiday brain, when Monday and Thursday begin to feel suspiciously interchangeable.[3](https://www.designboom.com/design/stupid-engineerings-aluminum-wall-calendar-holiday-brain/)

The more interesting part is not the joke but the way it is manufactured. Ferrick studied industrial design and says he has spent six years working as a digital manufacturer specializing in CNC machining.[2](https://www.stupidstupid.net/about-5) Stupid Engineering began as a personal downtime project with a constraint: make attractive, functional, easily manufacturable objects that solve a problem in the simplest, silliest or “stupidest” way possible.[2](https://www.stupidstupid.net/about-5)

Its first cardholder, for example, used the spring from a clothes peg. Day Display pushes the same logic in a more monolithic direction. Few parts, almost no features, one legible material and a geometry that looks close to the process that produced it.

There is a useful object-design lesson inside the gag: **visual simplicity and manufacturing simplicity are not the same thing, but they can be designed together**.

A minimal-looking product can still demand a ridiculous production chain. Ferrick instead looks for forms compatible with the machines he already understands. CNC machining does not arrive after the drawing merely to manufacture the idea. It helps define which ideas are worth drawing in the first place.

The final object is deliberately excessive for the task. A piece of paper could technically do the job. It just would not explain the method as clearly: start with an absurdly small problem, strip away functions, then let material and process provide almost all the character.
