# The concert that didn't crackle

Nightly German orchestra broadcasts sounded far too clean to be records. That one detail led an American engineer to the Magnetophon, the machine that made audio editing invisible, then normal, then universal.

During the war the BBC went off the air at midnight. Jack Mullin, a US Army Signal Corps engineer stationed in Britain from 1943, spent his days fighting radio interference that radar pumped straight into FM links; at night, to keep listening to music, he simply spun the dial toward Germany.[2](https://radiolab.org/podcast/mixtape-jack-and-bing/transcript) The signal was strong, the programs plentiful, and big orchestras played late into the night.

Mullin knew sound professionally. In those years telling a record from a live broadcast by ear was basic craft: discs clicked and hissed. These German midnight orchestras didn't crackle. Not even a little. Too clean for pressings, so it had to be live? Every single night, at three in the morning, with entire orchestras on duty? The answer turned out to be a machine, the Magnetophon, built by Germany's AEG around tape stock from I.G. Farben. Its story goes well past fidelity, though. Because good tape could be cut and rejoined without leaving an audible trace, the Magnetophon made editing invisible. Once editing was invisible, it became routine. Once it became routine, it became the norm for everything that followed in audio production. A gilded cigarette is where it starts. Then come Nazi propaganda, a singer sick of time zones, and one joke somebody decided was too spicy. Somewhere in that pile lies how we all learned to manufacture sound.

## A gilded cigarette

The story starts outside audio, in cigarette paper. In the early 1920s Fritz Pfleumer made industrial paper products in Dresden. Fancy cigarettes wore a real gold band at the tip. Cheap makers faked it with dyed paper, which stained smokers' lips, which nobody forgives. So Pfleumer came up with something cheaper still: powdered bronze to fake the gold.[1](https://spectrum.ieee.org/magnetophon-laugh-track)

Recording wasn't Pfleumer's trade. He simply knew the big idea of the day, magnetic recording on steel wire, patented back in 1898 by Denmark's Valdemar Poulsen. His own reasoning fit in a sentence. If metallic powder sticks to paper, why not replace the wire with a paper strip coated in magnetizable material? His "sounding paper" got patented in 1928, machine included. It sounded mediocre and tore all the time. Two properties made up for that, though. You could slice it up. Industrializing meant partners, so in 1932 Pfleumer signed with AEG. Hermann Bücher, chairman of AEG's board, chased the project personally. He also fixed the supply side: tape would come from I.G. Farben, the future BASF, run by his friend Wilhelm Gaus. AEG builds the machine, Farben makes the ribbon.[1](https://spectrum.ieee.org/magnetophon-laugh-track)

## Berlin, 1935

A debut was booked for the 1934 Berlin Radio Show, then canceled two days before opening because the thing wasn't ready. A year later it was, and the Magnetophon became the hit of the 1935 Funkausstellung. The K1, the first industrially manufactured tape recorder, owed much to engineer Eduard Schüller's work.[1](https://spectrum.ieee.org/magnetophon-laugh-track)[3](https://museumofmagneticsoundrecording.org/ManufacturersAEGMagnetophon.html)

Requests poured in for odd variants. One combined the recorder with a telephone. One played prerecorded music. One added fake reverb for open-air concerts. Plastic tape, far lighter than rival machines' solid steel bands, kept the device smaller and cheaper; by the late 1930s German radio stations used it routinely.[1](https://spectrum.ieee.org/magnetophon-laugh-track)[4](https://ethw.org/Magnetophon)

Then in 1938, the K4, the line's first real commercial success. At 77 cm/s with a 1,000-meter reel you got about twenty-two minutes per run. Next to wax and discs that felt like a bottomless crate. ## The disappointed conductor

Sound quality kept tripping on its own feet. Case in point: 1936, Sir Thomas Beecham touring Germany with the London Philharmonic. A Mozart performance went onto a K2 running at 100 cm/s, on the era's black ferrous-oxide tape. On playback, distortion and noise everywhere. Chemistry caught up fast. Come 1939, black oxide gave way to red ferric oxide Fe2O3, a formula good enough to stay a world standard until chrome tapes showed up in the 1970s. And one detail worth savoring: the botched Beecham tape survived into the 1990s, got transferred, and then the original reel went missing.[3](https://museumofmagneticsoundrecording.org/ManufacturersAEGMagnetophon.html)

## Invisible frequencies

Background noise stayed stubborn. DC bias already helped some. The real leap happened inside the Reichs-Rundfunk-Gesellschaft, the state broadcaster, around 1940–41, when engineers Hans Joachim von Braunmühl and Walter Weber stumbled onto AC bias. As the oft-told version goes, a machine sent away "for repair" produced extraordinary recordings because its DC bias amplifier was oscillating instead of holding steady.[3](https://museumofmagneticsoundrecording.org/ManufacturersAEGMagnetophon.html)

How it works: you add an inaudible high-frequency signal, usually somewhere between 40 and 150 kHz, which straightens out the tape's response and slashes distortion exactly where recordings suffer most, the quiet passages.[1](https://spectrum.ieee.org/magnetophon-laugh-track) One honest footnote here. IEEE Spectrum attaches the advance to the 1938 K4; historians of the subject date the discovery at the RRG a few years later. Nobody disputes what happened next, though: listeners stopped being able to tell recordings from live broadcasts.[1](https://spectrum.ieee.org/magnetophon-laugh-track) The RRG recorded concerts, operas, and speeches by the yard. Stereo recorders existed by 1943. About 250 stereo tapes got made before the war ended; three survive, among them Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto with pianist Walter Gieseking. In 1944 Richard Strauss conducted the Vienna Philharmonic through his tone poems on tape at the State Opera.[3](https://museumofmagneticsoundrecording.org/ManufacturersAEGMagnetophon.html)

## The state secret

The regime saw the use right away. Hitler's speeches went out from stations in cities he had no business being in, which badly muddied Allied attempts to find him; in the technical literature the Magnetophon literally became a propaganda weapon for the Führer's long harangues.[1](https://spectrum.ieee.org/magnetophon-laugh-track)[4](https://ethw.org/Magnetophon)

It remained a jealously guarded secret. Allied intelligence knew the Germans had some new recording process, knew nothing about how it worked, and only got working models in hand during the 1944–45 invasion.[3](#ref-3]

The irony is that the secret nearly slipped before the war. In November 1937, AEG's American affiliate in Schenectady received a Magnetophon and showed it to engineers at General Electric down the road. They waved it off. The anecdote comes from historian Friedrich K. Engel, who dug deep into the file.[1](https://spectrum.ieee.org/magnetophon-laugh-track) Of everything in this file, that detail teaches me more than most disruption stories do. The machine stood there, demonstrated, working. The refusal came from certainty, pure culture: live radio needed no copy.

## Two suitcases

Back to Mullin. When the Allies pushed into Germany, Mullin's job was inspecting abandoned equipment and writing reports about it. Somewhere along the way a British officer crossed his path, giddy about a tape machine he'd just seen at Radio Frankfurt. Mullin stayed polite. Inside, he figured the man "must have had a tin ear." Any engineer of the time knew exactly what tape recorders were worth.[2](https://radiolab.org/podcast/mixtape-jack-and-bing/transcript)

He went anyway. The station operated out of a house near Bad Nauheim. Someone handed him a reel and pressed play. "That's when I flipped. Never ever had I heard anything like that."[2](https://radiolab.org/podcast/mixtape-jack-and-bing/transcript)

Permission arrived to keep two disassembled machines, fifty reels of tape, and the schematics. The 1945 military certificate authorizing the haul survives. It sits at Stanford, in the Mullin-Palmer holdings of the Archive of Recorded Sound, and describes the booty as captured Morse-code equipment.[1](https://spectrum.ieee.org/magnetophon-laugh-track)[5](https://oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/kt5k4036nc_aspace_ref162_6i6) Back in California he dragged his suitcases around the movie studios. Himself, he never doubted them. "They were, in fact, the only sound recorders in the whole United States that performed with such fidelity," he remembered later. "There wasn't anything that sounded as good as my two little German machines."[2](https://radiolab.org/podcast/mixtape-jack-and-bing/transcript)

## NBC says no

One client was missing, and the client was Bing Crosby. By 1944 the same voice sang for Allied troops and for half of American households. His Kraft Music Hall on NBC drew roughly fifty million listeners a week, going by archivist Robert Bader's count.[2](https://radiolab.org/podcast/mixtape-jack-and-bing/transcript) And the man was worn out. Every show had to be performed twice, three hours apart, so both coasts heard it in the evening. All he wanted was to record once and go home.[1](https://spectrum.ieee.org/magnetophon-laugh-track)

What stood in the way was technical as much as cultural. Shows got preserved on 78 rpm transcription discs, and their clicks announced canned radio to anyone with ears. NBC figured nobody would sit through that. Legend has Crosby pleading his own case; in reality he sent his lawyers, and the answer was no.[1](https://spectrum.ieee.org/magnetophon-laugh-track)[2](https://radiolab.org/podcast/mixtape-jack-and-bing/transcript) Crosby sat out a year. Then he signed with ABC, a scrappy young network delighted to take whatever the majors refused.[1](https://spectrum.ieee.org/magnetophon-laugh-track)

## The curtain test

October 1946, an MGM auditorium. Mullin set his Magnetophon up against a symphony orchestra, with a room full of Hollywood executives watching. The orchestra played while Mullin recorded; then the stage curtain dropped. The music stopped, and a voice called from backstage: "Okay, boys. That's fine. Let's do another take. One, two, three, four." The orchestra struck up again — and mid-performance the curtain rose. On stage the musicians strolled around, smoked cigarettes, shook hands. "That was the night when it hit," Mullin said later. Crosby's technical producer Murdo MacKenzie caught the demo and set up a private showing. Crosby loved it and put $50,000 into Ampex, the small company building an American Magnetophon. Call it $800,000 today. Mullin became his chief engineer; 3M made the American tape.[1](https://spectrum.ieee.org/magnetophon-laugh-track)

Philco Radio Time returned in 1947, recorded on the two German machines and the fifty smuggled reels. Season two, the ratings climbed back. ## Razor work

The real revolution wasn't fidelity. It was a gesture steel wire had made nearly impossible: cutting the tape with a razor and rejoining it in any order. Historian Mark Clark puts it cleanly. Film had been edited for decades, but film shows its cuts on screen. In sound they're invisible. No listener catches them.[2](https://radiolab.org/podcast/mixtape-jack-and-bing/transcript)

On top of that, Crosby's team invented new working methods. Rehearsal in the morning, performance at night, and Mullin assembling the best takes of both: "the best possible show out of two different shows".[2](https://radiolab.org/podcast/mixtape-jack-and-bing/transcript) Raw family-archive tapes capture the method in action: mid-song, Crosby loses his place, laughs, cues the band — "Wait a minute. Time. Wrong words. Go back a little, John" — then admits, delighted with himself, that he got "carried away listening to my own voice". That take went in the drawer; the public heard only what was kept.[2](https://radiolab.org/podcast/mixtape-jack-and-bing/transcript) Robert Bader, who manages Crosby's archive, says it plainly: they hardly ever played before a real audience anymore. "Believe me, it's a fake live show", and they were very good at building one.[2](https://radiolab.org/podcast/mixtape-jack-and-bing/transcript)

None of it showed. June 1948, New York, and comedian Fred Allen says on air: "That applause had a lot of life to it. Did you have it transcribed out in sunny California?" Laughter. Crosby replied: "No, Fred, that applause came from those lovely people sitting out there in the audience." The audience applauded a joke about the audience's absence.[2](https://radiolab.org/podcast/mixtape-jack-and-bing/transcript) As Radiolab concludes, there is no way to know what actually happened in that studio. Liveness had become a reproducible style rather than an event.

## Laugh number three

That is the context in which the laugh track appears. During one session a guest told an uproariously funny story that was a little too blue for broadcast. The joke couldn't air. The producer heard something else worth keeping: "I want that laugh. Soon the team had a library: about a dozen numbered laughs, from polite titter to collective roar. Weak joke? Splice one in afterward and the broadcast sounds fine.[1](https://spectrum.ieee.org/magnetophon-laugh-track)[2](https://radiolab.org/podcast/mixtape-jack-and-bing/transcript) Trouble started the day a genuinely flat joke aired with orders to attach "laugh number three". Mullin said no. His daughter Eve remembered where he stood: it was leading the audience, and it wasn't honest. The man who had built a career on faithful sound now spoke of faithful joy; his own home movies were never edited.[2](https://radiolab.org/podcast/mixtape-jack-and-bing/transcript)

Mary Crosby stands up for her father here. Bing never saw any conflict between live and taped, only "the freedom and the reach and the possibilities".[2](https://radiolab.org/podcast/mixtape-jack-and-bing/transcript) Both attitudes have shared every control room since, and I don't think you can finally rule between a singer who wanted to go home and an engineer who wanted sound to tell the truth. The laugh track, born from one scheduling accident, became one of the first synthetic social signals inserted into a work after the fact.

## After the razor

Editing accepted, uses followed almost by themselves. Tape a show in the afternoon, air it that evening on every coast: delay stopped being a double performance and became a programming choice. A great night could be replayed unchanged months later. News got assembled. Effects got manufactured. Machines captured in 1945 were copied in France, Britain, and the United States.[4](https://ethw.org/Magnetophon) Ampex equipped radio first, then music studios; everywhere, engineers learned to cut tape the way film editors cut celluloid, and recording stopped being a captured performance to become a construction. A detail that outlived decades: Germany's 77 cm/s converted into American inches gives 76.2 cm/s — the 30 ips speed that became an international reference.[6](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetophon) In 1969 AEG-Telefunken celebrated its two-millionth Magnetophon shipped.[3](https://museumofmagneticsoundrecording.org/ManufacturersAEGMagnetophon.html)

## Ears stop voting

There's one less comfortable consequence. For decades the ear had served as an instrument of proof. A disc crackled. Live sound breathed. The difference registered instantly. By making recordings indistinguishable from live broadcasts, the Magnetophon took that ability away from average listeners and professionals alike. After 1947, perfect sound proved nothing.[2](https://radiolab.org/podcast/mixtape-jack-and-bing/transcript)

Radiolab ends its story on manipulated videos and AI-generated voices. The parallel holds. Tool by tool we have rebuilt what Mullin's listeners lived through: an ear that hears perfectly and guarantees nothing.[2](https://radiolab.org/podcast/mixtape-jack-and-bing/transcript) Between claimed authenticity and the edited self everyone publishes, doubt has settled into ordinary media habits, not just their fringes. The gesture won completely: cut, rearrange, smooth, publish. Every tightly edited podcast, every reconstructed news piece, every album assembled from chosen takes descends directly from a razor blade drawn across German tape.

One of Mullin's two rebuilt Magnetophons is on display today at the Pavek Museum in Minnesota.[1](https://spectrum.ieee.org/magnetophon-laugh-track)[7](https://pavekmuseum.org/) As for the 1945 certificate held at Stanford, it officially authorizes the return of equipment described as captured Morse-code gear.[1](https://spectrum.ieee.org/magnetophon-laugh-track)[5](https://oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/kt5k4036nc_aspace_ref162_6i6) Military bureaucracy filed the machine away without ever understanding what it had approved. The orchestra, meanwhile, is still playing behind the curtain.
