# To Exhibit Buses, This Museum Starts by Building a Bridge

An unselected proposal for Madrid's future EMT museum split two problems apart: reinforced concrete would carry heavy buses while an almost weightless ETFE skin closed the building around them.

A historic bus is badly behaved as a museum object. It is long, heavy, awkward to turn and entirely indifferent to the comfortable proportions of a conventional gallery. When Madrid launched the competition for its future EMT museum, the brief therefore demanded more than good display cases: entire vehicles had to be stored, moved and exhibited.[4](https://www.emtmadrid.es/Noticias/EMT-Madrid-pone-en-marcha-el-concurso-publico-del.aspx)

The proposal by Luca Poian Forms, Frade Arquitectos and Prointec answered that constraint by separating two jobs almost brutally. **Concrete carries the buses. A metal and ETFE envelope closes the museum.**[1](https://www.lucapoianforms.com/projects/emt-museum/)[2](https://fradearquitectos.com/)

This proposal will not become the future museum as drawn, since the competition was ultimately awarded to HAGO's scheme, "Umbral."[5](https://www.coam.org/concursos/servicios-concursos-concursos-ocam-concurso-emt-museo/)[6](https://www.eldiario.es/madrid/somos/arganzuela/estudio-arquitectura-gana-concurso-disenar-nuevo-polemico-museo-emt-madrid_1_12928090.html) The Poian-Frade entry remains useful precisely as competition architecture, however, because it makes a structural decision unusually easy to see.

A building displaying cars can often behave like an ordinary museum, whereas a building displaying buses on several levels begins to behave like infrastructure.

## Carry the buses

The existing EMT museum holds more than forty historic vehicles, and the planned new site near Madrid Río is intended to bring that collection to a 4,460-square-metre plot in the former Mahou-Calderón area.[4](https://www.emtmadrid.es/Noticias/EMT-Madrid-pone-en-marcha-el-concurso-publico-del.aspx)

Poian and Frade list 10,620 square metres of built area and a €46 million budget for their proposal.[1](https://www.lucapoianforms.com/projects/emt-museum/) Those numbers belong to the architects' competition entry, rather than to the scheme eventually selected.

The bluntest problem is span: whole buses consume width and need routes through the building, so adding columns across the halls might simplify local structural spans while immediately making collection movement harder.

The team therefore proposed large column-free rooms carried by a **reinforced-concrete bridge system**.[1](https://www.lucapoianforms.com/projects/emt-museum/)[2](https://fradearquitectos.com/) Bridge is more than a decorative metaphor here. The structure has to cross substantial open spaces and collect heavy loads where they can be transferred down to the ground.

Structurally, the museum starts to resemble a depot even as the architecture tries not to look like one.

## A light skin

That is where ETFE enters the proposal.

Instead of asking the facade to be mass, primary structure and architectural image at once, the design treats it as a lightweight envelope carried by metal framing. The architects describe translucent ETFE air cushions that admit daylight and soften the presence of the concrete structure.[1](https://www.lucapoianforms.com/projects/emt-museum/)[2](https://fradearquitectos.com/)

The contrast is deliberate: infrastructure capable of carrying buses sits inside, while an inflated skin with very little mass compared with a masonry facade wraps around it.

Designboom focused on exactly this opposition between infrastructural scale and a light envelope.[3](https://www.designboom.com/architecture/luca-poian-transit-history-museum-madrid-lightweight-inflatable-facade-etfe-frade/) The visual effect is obvious in the renderings, yet the construction logic is more interesting because each system receives a fairly specific problem.

Concrete takes the large loads, steel holds the envelope, and ETFE handles enclosure, daylight and part of the climatic behavior claimed by the designers.[1](https://www.lucapoianforms.com/projects/emt-museum/)

That last claim needs the conditional. The teams describe the envelope as a passive climate system that optimizes light and thermal performance; this remains a competition proposal rather than an occupied building with measured energy use.[1](https://www.lucapoianforms.com/projects/emt-museum/)

## Split the jobs

The separation looks obvious after it has been drawn, although it is not the only way to begin a building.

Architecture often values components that perform several functions at once: a load-bearing facade, a roof that braces a frame, a wall that becomes storage. Some constraints become clearer when they are deliberately pulled apart instead.

A heavier envelope would not make a bus easier to move here, while making the main structure transparent would not solve the span; the two demands can therefore change largely independently.

That matters in a museum expected to change. The architects described a highly adaptable ground floor for exhibitions, workshops, conferences and public events, alongside clearly separated public and service flows.[1](https://www.lucapoianforms.com/projects/emt-museum/)[2](https://fradearquitectos.com/)

Rather than drawing every future exhibition into the structure, the scheme provides large clear areas within which exhibition design can move.

## Two routes

A bus museum also has a problem rarely visible in a painting gallery: the exhibits sometimes need a road.

Visitors have to move through the building without becoming part of the heavy operations used to relocate, maintain or install vehicles. The proposal therefore emphasizes the separation of public and service circulation.[1](https://www.lucapoianforms.com/projects/emt-museum/)

That distinction becomes a second, invisible structure in which people, workshops and civic rooms occupy one network while multi-ton objects that must enter, leave, turn and be worked on occupy another.

The column-free hall is therefore more than a search for monumentality, because it also reduces conflicts between those two circulation systems.

## Avoid the hangar

The aesthetic problem follows directly from the brief. A building that needs vehicle routes, large spans and space for rolling heritage has every reason to look like a hangar.

Poian and Frade keep the hangar logic in the structure, then soften it through the envelope and the way the building meets the Madrid Río landscape.[1](https://www.lucapoianforms.com/projects/emt-museum/)

The translucent shell rounds the volumes and allows some interior activity to remain perceptible. In the renderings, the museum reads less like an opaque industrial box and more like a luminous volume at the edge of the park.

A rendering cannot prove the difficult parts, of course: actual ETFE transparency under changing light, membrane maintenance, summer comfort, acoustics or operating energy remain unresolved by images alone.

That is one reason design competitions compare propositions rather than renderings in isolation.

## The losing entry

In January 2026, the opening of the identities behind the awarded entries revealed HAGO's "Umbral" as the first-prize scheme. A later appeal briefly interrupted the process; COAM's competition record now lists an award resolution published on February 5 and the special appeal resolution on March 23.[5](https://www.coam.org/concursos/servicios-concursos-concursos-ocam-concurso-emt-museo/)[6](https://www.eldiario.es/madrid/somos/arganzuela/estudio-arquitectura-gana-concurso-disenar-nuevo-polemico-museo-emt-madrid_1_12928090.html)

That changes the correct way to look at the Poian-Frade project.

What survives here is one response produced by the competition, later published by its designers and widely circulated for its ETFE facade, rather than a preview of a building about to be constructed.[1](https://www.lucapoianforms.com/projects/emt-museum/)[3](https://www.designboom.com/architecture/luca-poian-transit-history-museum-madrid-lightweight-inflatable-facade-etfe-frade/)

To be sure, losing the competition does not make the proposal useless; in some ways it makes the structural lesson cleaner because nobody has to pretend it "won" in order to examine it.

Its most transferable question is simple: **when a building has to carry something exceptionally heavy, does its envelope need to express the same heaviness?**

Here the answer was no: the weight stays in the bridge while the light stays in the skin.

This museum is unlikely ever to be built in this form, but that separation is clear enough to travel elsewhere.
