# This alphabet prints the festival while it is still happening

A Billboard Alphabet turns Module Festival into raw material: observe, draw, print, display, then repeat in public.

A festival identity is normally finished before the doors open. Posters are printed, the alphabet selected, templates locked. *A Billboard Alphabet* proposes a less comfortable chronology: **use the festival itself as material for making a graphic language while the event is happening**.[1](https://wdc2026.org/de/events/a-billboard-alphabet-druck-workshop)

The workshop is part of Module Festival within the World Design Capital Frankfurt RheinMain 2026 programme.[2](https://wdc2026.org/en/constellations/module-festival)[3](https://wdo.org/programmes/wdc/wdcfrankfurtrheinmain2026/signatureevents/) Participants observe their surroundings, develop signs and print them. ## The brief is outside

That detail matters. The forms do not come from a moodboard prepared weeks earlier. The event site is the field of observation. Signage, temporary structures, circulation, objects, existing letters and visual accidents can all become inputs to the system.[1](https://wdc2026.org/de/events/a-billboard-alphabet-druck-workshop)

This turns the workshop into a small research machine. Observation is not an abstract phase. Something has to be extracted from reality, simplified enough to become a sign, then tested in print.

The billboard closes the loop quickly. Instead of waiting for a final portfolio, the work immediately returns to the space that produced it. Participants can see their decisions at distance, beside other proposals and inside the festival’s actual visual noise.

## Publishing before finishing

The process also removes some of digital design’s comfort. On screen, a letter can be corrected until nobody remembers the first idea. Printing creates a state. The billboard accumulates those states.[1](https://wdc2026.org/de/events/a-billboard-alphabet-druck-workshop)

The result therefore does not need to be a perfectly homogeneous alphabet in the sense of a commercial typeface. Its coherence can come from the shared method: same field, same translation constraint, same printing process, same display site.

That distinction is useful. A graphic system is not necessarily a set of forms decided once and forever. It can be **a rule capable of producing new forms**. Here the rule is to look at the festival, extract a vocabulary and send it back into the festival.

World Design Capital Frankfurt RheinMain 2026 uses the year as a framework for design events and experiments across the region.[3](https://wdo.org/programmes/wdc/wdcfrankfurtrheinmain2026/signatureevents/) *A Billboard Alphabet* gives that ambition a tiny, concrete form: communication is no longer only what announces the programme. It becomes one of the places where the programme is made.

The billboard ends up looking less like advertising than a workshop wall placed outdoors. **It does not display a finished identity. It shows an identity learning to speak.**[1](https://wdc2026.org/de/events/a-billboard-alphabet-druck-workshop)
